A Prussian semaphore tower. The semaphore system was a optical telegraphic communication system, used from 1832 to 1849 between Berlin and the Rhine Province over a distance of nearly 550 kilometers (342 miles). It took hours to transmit some words from here to Berlin. Modern telecommunication at that time – today, every kid has a cellphone.
